[Gresham’s] work embodies the experience of feeling out of place in a society that tries to place you into boxes so that it’s easier for them to perceive (govern) you. He captures the feeling of disconnection from the world when the reality inside our heads fails to align with the one we live in.

This review of Jon Gresham’s debut short story collection We Rose Up Slowly explores the surreal, sometimes magical realist modes of storytelling Gresham engages with. I analyse the relationship between speculative fiction in Singapore and the bizarre categories that make up our everyday realities.
